Charity Secondary moved one step closer to retain their Region Two crown with a comprehensive 4-2 victory over Cotton Field Secondary when the Digicel National Schools’ football Championship continued on Sunday at the New Opportunity Corps ground on the Essequibo Coast.
Charity will now take on Wakapoa in the final at Anna Regina on Saturday. Charity clearly dominated the proceedings from the inception and deservedly went ahead in the 7th minute when Brian Abrams slotted home following a corner from Ronaldo D’Oliveira.
Arnold Wells could have doubled the lead shortly after but his shot from just outside the area went straight to the keeper. Charity continued to attack, and Ariel Chester missed two scoring chances before finding the back of the net from inside the box in the 26thminute.
Attacking midfielder Deandre Thomas then extended the advantage in the 39th to hand Charity a 3-0 lead at half time. Cotton Field hardly had a shot on goal in the first half, but their game improved tremendously after the break. However Charity got further ahead five minutes into the second half as Chester netted his second from inside the 18-yard box. Earl Abrams pulled one back for Cotton Field in the 56th minute after he received a pass just on the edge to the box. D’Oliveira could have put Charity further ahead but he failed to make contact after the ball was played across the goal. Cotton Field suddenly increased their pace and won a penalty after Charity goal keeper Leeland Smith handled the ball outside the box, however Joel Caesar shot sailed over the bar much to the dismay of their fans. Cotton Field passed the ball around much more than in the first half and kept possession for sometime forcing their opponents to defend. Joshua Jones then scored Cotton Field second after Charity failed to clear the ball just in front of goal in the 77th; nevertheless a brave Wakapoa team awaits them on July 2.
