The event which will be held from August 19 to August 22 at the Albion Sports Complex will be held under the theme ‘Promoting Entrepreneurship for a Diversified Economy.’
Raffik said that the chamber is pleased to host the event once again. He took the opportunity to highlight some of the achievements of the chamber over the years.
He called on the government to lead the way in promoting businesses and help create employment.
“Government must step up. We are getting too much talk. What we need now is action. The government needs to lead the way, if not with the finances… Help us with the expertise and we will do our part,” he lamented.
“Keep seminars, bring the expertise…we are willing to work hand in hand with the government to push the economy forward. We know Berbice has a lot of potentials, but we must get help in exploring those potentials.”
“People want to come home, but there are concerns about the crime. We know there are some movements but there are still bottlenecks. We are fed up hearing about Berbice being a sleeping giant. We are still sleeping”.
He said that they would like to meet with the Minister of Agriculture to seek avenues to expand
their product base and make Berbice the real basket of the Caribbean. He urged the Minister of Business to take their sentiment to Cabinet. He congratulated the police for helping to curb the crime situation in the county.
Delivering the feature address Minister of Business, Investment and Tourism, Dominic Gaskin, congratulated the CCCC and pledge the government’s support for the continued success of the expo.
“Expos are meant to promote and help develop businesses. He cited some challenges which organisers are faced with by hosting such activities, two of which are financing and participation.
The Ministry intends to work with organisations to institute programmes that prepare businesses to showcase their products, expand and access funding.
There are a lot of benefits out there and Government is willing to assist. Business must also look at other ways of making money and diversifying. He urged those responsible to come up with ideas and initiatives and move away from the same old way of doing things.
“We need to move beyond that and diversify into value added; the same thing had been happening year after year. Guyana needs to move away from that. We should have been further after 50 years.”
Also speaking at the activity was the Director of Guyana Tourism Authority, Indranauth Haralsingh who congratulated the organisers for what they have been doing over the years.
He said that the GTA will be coordinating and seeking the participation of a number of tourism related businesses across the country in order to explore domestic tourism.
A domestic tourism survey will be done at the expo. The GTA will once again be working with the organizers to coordinate a number of competitions at the expo. He noted the number of opportunities available for tourism and other businesses in Berbice.
Regional Chairman David Armogan and Coordinator Tajpaul Adjodhea.
The Berbice Expo and Trade Fair were first held in July 2005.
