Dear Editor;
It is frustrating and not easy to contemplate the fact that years ago Guyanese were receiving daily power outages at the hands of Guyana Power and Light (GPL) and, fast forward to 2016, Guyanese are still experiencing the same situation.
In a day and age when customers are deemed to be all important to business, the fact that substandard services continue to be meted out to Guyanese by this utility company, without even the courtesy of a press conference where they can face questions and tell the nation, through the media, what is going on in their agency, just boggles my mind.
We know what is going on with the other utility company, Guyana Water Incorporated, as this entity has been exceedingly open to the media and has gone out of its way to hold press conferences or release statements. Are operations at GPL a state secret?
Perchance the management of GPL have not fallen into a coma, they need to explain to the nation why is it the country is still getting daily blackouts? What is happening to the million dollar substations that were constructed? Was that a waste of money? We need to know.
We need to know what corrective measures are being taken by the administration. We need to know what have been the line losses thus far for the year. We need to know at what stage is the Inter American Development Bank (IDB) and the European Union (EU) funded Power utility upgrade program. And we need this information in detail. If there is a Public Relations Officer at GPL, can he or she provide some kind of information for the nation?
Why should Guyanese have to bear the costs for damaged appliances at the hands of power surges? Why should Guyanese with businesses enterprises have to spend additional money purchasing a generator running on fuel just to ensure an uninterrupted flow of electricity, when we already have to pay astronomical bills to GPL? Why should Guyanese have to pay the price for ineffectual service, year after year? After 50 years of Independence, aren’t things supposed to change for the better?
