Wakapoa Secondary edged Aurora Secondary on penalties to earn a spot in the final of the Region Two leg of the Digicel National Schools Football Championship which continued Saturday at the New Opportunity Corps ground, Essequibo Coast.
Following a 2-2 draw at the end of regulation time, Wakapoa converted twice while Aurora only hit their target once from six penalties.
Aurora had the better of the opening minutes and could have gone ahead, but Jermaine Ramlagan shot from inside the area hit the crossbar after he was fed by Orinson Gibson.
However, Aurora grabbed the advantage in the 21st minute when Dwane Thomas free kick from the edge of the area ricochet off a defender and before finding the back of the net. Thomas had another free kick from a similar position minutes before half time, but on this occasion his shot went over the bar.
Wakapoa on the other hand hardly threatened in the first half as they went to the break trailing by one. Both teams created more chances early in the second half but couldn’t finish as shots went wide of goal.
Wakapoa pushed forward in search of an equaliser and won a penalty in the 52nd; Recardo Thomas made no mistake from the spot.
Nine minutes later Aurora went ahead as Orinson Gibson tap home from inside the area after he was fed by Ramlagan following a free kick by Thomas.
Nixon Cornelius almost drew Wakapoa level but his shot from the right side of the box was smartly headed out by Quintine Sampson. Nixon had another chance to score but his weak shot was calmly saved by Goalkeeper Paul Gouveia.
Aurora seemed almost certain of a place in the final, but Simon Peters free kick found the back of the net in injury time handing Wakapoa their second goal.
