Despite heavy showers of blessings, a large number of people turned out to deliver their contribution and provide words of encouragement to Boxer Clive ‘the punisher’ Atwell outside the Payless Variety Store on Wellington Street on Saturday.
The holder of the National Featherweight and Lightweight belts in addition to the WBC CABOFE Featherweight & WBC CABOFE Jr Welterweight titles, Atwell also fought for a World title in Mexico.
The Champion fainted in the ninth round of his title fight against T&T based Dexter Gonzales at the Giftland Mall and had an emergency surgery the same night for bleeding in his brain. Atwell has to do a second surgery which cannot be done in Guyana at this time and needs $5Million for the operation, after-care and air tickets to T&T where the surgery will be done.
DVD’s of some of the champion’s title fights were on sale while there were photos of Atwell, who provided autographs for his fan. The event was well organised by the ‘Champions team’ and received a great response from the Guyanese people.
Atwell was grateful for the support but it was a one-legged man limping in the rain to bring his contribution and the little children with umbrellas and rain coats accompanied by their parents and guardians that moved the champion almost to tears. He encouraged them to keep on the good and kind path in life.
A lay clergy of the Methodist church in the Caribbean and America, functioning in the Dominica Circuit and Guyana District, Atwell took time out to pronounce a Benediction on the little ones and quoted a scripture from Isaiah 11:6 which said ‘and a little child will lead them all’. He encouraged them to be a leader in their life, to give respect and honour to whom it is due no matter how high they climb in life.
Those wishing to support Atwell can contact him on 642-9961/672-9215, while donations can be delivered to Payless Variety Store or deposited at Republic Bank Account # 242-970-2. DVDs of the champ fights are on sale at Payless Variety Store.
“The public has been responding kindly to me and I am grateful and should the Government keep their pledge of $2Million and am I to receive it soon along with the generous contributions from Guyana, I will soon reach the target. Thanks to God for Grace and Mercies and for assigning me angels in the person of my wife Altavi Atwell, Mr Williams and everyone that has joined to aid me in this fight for full recovery,” an emotional Atwell concluded.
