Dear Editor;
It is quite commendable that the President would even wish to City Hall in Georgetown with his presence. Quite frankly the only persons that should be visiting there are forensic auditors and criminal investigators from the Guyana Police Force. But then again, there are some decent folks there like the Deputy Mayor and I guess President cannot continue to turn a blind eye to the rape and plunder of a municipality for which his governing coalition has 25 out of the 30 seats.
But he must be careful not to seem to be giving legitimacy to the questionable ones operating there nor should he give them more opportunities to pillage under the guise of promoting urban renewal and sanitizing the city by continuing to clean the drains, and the removal of solid waste. The administration would be more than glad to use this as an opportunity to continue to engage ‘Brother’ their favourite contractor for more hundreds of millions of dollars for their own purposes, without competitive bidding or transparency.
He must not give them a blank cheque. The President must not suggest but demand that the old ways that Council did business end immediately. It is not fair that state and government agencies are being inspected by Forensic Auditors, and made to adhere to the financial laws of Guyana, to meet transparency expectations and to honour international fiscal standards whilst the Council does the exact opposite.
The argument which is being used that the government must not dictate to Council what to do is a convenient one being used by the outlaws at City Hall to shelter from prosecution. The governing coalition has 25 seats and therefore it is they who have to demand the cessation of the banditry at City Hall.
The President is the embodiment and representative of every Guyanese including each citizen of Georgetown and therefore must ensure that the voices that are crying out against the tyranny of City Hall be heard.
He must stop this parking meter fiasco which would not only bring hardship to residents and visitors to the capital, but will fill the pockets of those who negotiated such a crooked contract. He must bring relief to the vendors on the Merriman’s Mall who are housed in little dog kennels for exorbitant fees and those who are housed in what the Council is calling Parliament View Mall.
He me must demand that they stop killing the animals on a daily basis in such an inhumane manner at the Abattoir. He must bring an end to the madness at City Hall and the only way he can do so is by making changes to the administration at City Hall.
