-CBC Evaluation Team expected Monday
The Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) continues to undergo a much-needed upgrade with July 1 set as the deadline for completion of all works that will ensure the venue is compliant with the requisite standards necessary
to host an international basketball competition.
The Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Executive Evaluation Commission, consisting of President, Glyne Clarke and Vice-President, Patrick Haynes visited Guyana in April to sign a Host Agreement with the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) for the CBC Under-16 Championships.
Part of that agreement is to have a facility that is in line with International Basketball Federation (FIBA) standards. As such, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has since undertaken several works to bring the facility in line with those standards.
To ensure that contractors meet the deadlines before the CBC Executive Evaluation Commission returns to Guyana on Monday, the NSC, GABF and Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the U-16 Championships, visited the venue for an update yesterday.
Guyana will host the CBC Championships, July 3-16 at the Sports Hall. The practice venue will be the National Gymnasium. Apart from internal and external painting, each of the locker rooms for players; bathrooms; and washrooms for patrons were completely redone.
The floor of the Sports Hall had to also be redone to remove all other markings. FIBA requires only basketball marks to be present on the floor. In addition, new basketball goals, including new shot clocks, control system and game clocks were imported from Gared Sports, an international company that produces high quality basketball products.
Zoom Online Shopping Company in Guyana Air Freighted the Goals to Guyana. The equipment is presently in Guyana awaiting completion of the floor to be erected over this weekend; the pair of goals and equipment cost in excess US$60,000, which included shipping.
“It’s a whole new system we will be installing at the Sports Hall. It is the FIBA level I approved system that is used in the NBA. When we’re done here we’ll have the latest and best equipments for basketball in the Caribbean,” GABF President, Nigel Hinds said.
Director of Sport, Christopher Jones echoed similar sentiments, stating that Guyana will have an improved venue that is in line with international standards, which is something to be applauded because the venue has never undergone such works since its construction eons ago.
Guyana will be hosting about 12 countries from next weekend for the CBC U-16 Championships at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. Guyana plays its first game at 8:30pm against Aruba on July 3 after the Opening Ceremony.
