-Sparta Boss, Leopold Street, Holmes Street among teams to play
Organisers of the Ministry of Health (MoH) Soft Shoe Football Competition, the Petra Organisation in a release stated that for reasons beyond their control, the Round of 16 phase of the tournament will commence
tonight instead of tomorrow, at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue.
Among the teams set to appear is defending champion Sparta Boss who will go up against Albouystown in what is anticipated to be a tough encounter.
The champs have been aided by the return of their talisman Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson, Devon Millington, Sheldon Shepherd and Denis Edwards.
These four players form the nucleus of their attack and have already shown what a lethal combination they could be.
On the other hand, Kemo Scott, who fired in a treble in their last encounter, will once again be called upon to duplicate hat performance, while Roy Samuels and Lennox Cort are the supporting cast.
In the night’s opener, North East La Penitence takes on Holmes Street of Tiger Bay and the former though being a solid team will have to lift their level to get past their opponents who’ve shown tremendous form since the start of the competition.
Calvin Moore has been among the bright sparks for North East La Penitence, but he will need much more support to get past a rejuvenated Holmes Street that has players the calibre of Jamal Blackman and Akeem Saul.
They started the tournament on a high after beating the powerful Sparta Boss unit and will definitely be looking for more scalps as the competition progresses.
The third encounter is between another Tiger bay side in Queen Street and Alexander Village and this one should see the former start as favourites judging from their recent form.
They’ve looked the team to beat and possessing the likes of Alpha Fletchman, Darren Harris and Omallo Williams in their line-up, it is hard to see how Alexander Village could prevail.
However, Alexander Village is a very experienced team in this format with Leon Yaw, and Shem Porter expected to play pivotal roles in their quest for victory.
The other game is between Kitty Weavers and Leopold Street and this promise to be a sizzler and a hard one to predict the outcome.
Weavers will be led by Sherwin Vincent and also include veterans Terrence ‘Ole Head’ Lewis, Nigel Denny and Alpha Sylvester.
Leopold street will be led by Rondel Williams and O’kenie Fraser.
The championship which is being played under the ‘Stop Gender-based Violence’ theme is slated to conclude on July 18.
The winning team will receive $300,000 and the Championship trophy, while second, third and fourth placed finishers will take home $200,000, $100,000 and $50,000 respectively.
Other sponsors of the event include GTT, Lucky Dollar, Nigel Supermarket, Junior’s Jewellery, Star Party Rentals and 2-J’s General Store.
