Relentless pressure paid the desired dividends in the end when Ann’s Grove Secondary eased to a 3-1 win over Presidents College in soggy conditions at the BV ground yesterday afternoon as the Digicel Schools Football
Championship continued.
The first half of this encounter ended 0-0 a score-line that the Ann’s Grove team could not have been pleased with having dominated their fellow East Coast counterparts but they squandered a plethora of opportunities.
But standing solid between the uprights with some heartwarming saves was Presidents College goalie, Akquyl Henry. However, the second half of the 70th minute match proved to be a completely different ball game as Ann’s Grove made their dominance count, goal wise.
Three minutes into the half the deadlock was broken by Rashleigh Morrison who lobbed the ball over the advancing Henry in the 38th minute, Ann’s Grove 1 Presidents College 0.
It was the breakthrough that the dominant Ann’s Grove were searching for all along and it was no turning back. The scoring was then taken over by Peter Headley who blasted a double in the 40th and 55th minutes to seal his side’s progress to the next round of matches despite Presidents College pulling one back in the 65th minute.
It was a beautiful header in the far corner from Jimmon De Santos that beat custodian Kareem Josiah all ends up. The boys from Presidents College had missed a penalty before they got on the score sheets.
Alex Downer was given the responsibility to take the kick after one of his teammates was brought down in the area. His shot was kicked away by Josiah who did even bother to use his hands.
Whilst conditions were a bit tough, both teams put up a good show and stood up to the test of representing their schools, their fitness stood out as they never relented. (Franklin Wilson)
