Dear Editor,
I want to bring to the attention of the public, the danger that lurks in the Merriman’s Mall after dark. What was a promising start to the ‘rebirth’ of this area, is quickly waning, and for me, slipping into a situation that is opposite to what it was originally intended to be.
The Mall has become a haven for vagrants and thieves alike and not just petty thieves, but professionals; armed and dangerous. On Wednesday evening, just after dark, a friend of mine was robbed at gunpoint just at the Light Street entrance of the Mall in the section between Light and Albert Streets, almost in the presence of patrons of the mall; whether they are patrons or ‘look out’ none can tell.
The park’s benches have become a comfortable spot for youths and ‘junkies’ to sit and smoke marijuana at leisure. There are no lights in the Mall between Light and Albert Streets, the security that ‘was’ provided for the area cannot match arms with the bandits that roam this area after dark, preying on the unsuspecting passerby.
One would think that with the ‘commercializing’ of this area, adequate security and proper lighting would have been provided. The Mayor and City Council and the Guyana Police Force should think seriously about the security of the residents of this neighborhood. I know that development comes with risks, but security risks should not be one of them.
We have been making commendable efforts to clean up our city, but no matter how ‘clean’ our city becomes it will be just a window dressing that hides the evil that lurks within if we don’t make efforts to clean the streets of the many criminals that roam free.
