-cites Slingerz position as unfortunate
Head Coach of reigning local league champions Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover is
calling for a review of the Stage Elite League (SEL) format.
The experienced coach who also serves as an Assistant Coach at the National Level believes that Slingerz’ position in terms of dominating the inaugural SEL FINALE and having also won the GENESIS but now must still play another match in order to determine the overall winners, is unfortunate.
“It’s kind of unfortunate that the league did not play on a round robin basis and end there. If I was in Slingerz’ place I would have felt the pain to know that we dominated totally and open a gap of points and still have to play a championship game.”
Dover is of the view that there must be a review of the league’s format: “I think in fairness, Slingerz should have already won the league and gone home; but to know that they have to play two more games, tonight and the next game is unfortunate.”
Slingerz ended the FINALE phase of the SEL six points clear of second placed Fruta Conquerors on 34 points; Alpha was four pints back on 34 with Pele in 4th on 17. The West Demerara based side was the only unbeaten team in the FINALE drawing just a single match out of 14.
These four teams made it to the semi finals which saw Slingerz and Alpha defeating Pele and Conquerors respectively before they faced off in the final which Alpha won on kicks from the penalty mark, 3-0. The final of all finals will be played on Sunday at the GDF ground. (F.Wilson)
