-Fraser scintillates to continue ascendency
By Edison Jefford
Police Progressive Youth Club (PPYC) won the Arthur Chung Memorial Track and Field
title at the Leonora Centre yesterday against a depleted Guyana Defense Force (GDF) team. The meet is a precursor to the Joint Services showdown in September.
Police amassed 278 points opposed to GDF’s 207 points to win the 14-events competition. Police’s United States-based College star, Alita Moore battered opponents in the sprint events at the meet that was held at the National Track and Field Centre Leonora. Moore ran 11.75 seconds to win the Women’s 100m ahead of GDF’s, Aniqua Powley, who ran 11.92s, and her team-mate, Jevina Sampson (12.43s) respectively.
More returned to separate her class from the field in the 200m with a 24.30s victory ahead of the talented Powley (25.80s) and Sampson (26.20s). Moore is on scholarship at ASA College, New York.
Ascending sprint ace, Davin Fraser cruised to victory for a sprint double, recording the blistering 10.1 seconds (hand time) in the 100m. Fraser was in so much control of the race that leaves very little to chance that he had time to glance at his opponents.
Fraser put the Army on show. Police’s Kevin Abensetts was second in 10.32 seconds with Tevin Garraway (10.5s) third. Fraser won the 200m ahead of Garraway and Linton Mentis.
Times were not available in this event.
Sampson won the 400m Women in 59.40 secs ahead of Soldier, Shawna Park (1:01.2) and Kezia Bess (1:03), representing Police, in that order. Police’s Winston Dummett won the male race in a time of 48.9 seconds while Wayne Harlequin (49.5) and Mentis (50.1) were second and third respectively.
GDF’s Odwin Tudor recorded the biggest win of his career when he staved off a challenge down the back straight from distance king Cleveland Forde to win the Men’s 1500m race in 4:09.8 that edge Forde’s 4:10.6 in an exciting finish. Police’s Nathaniel Giddings (4:22.3) was third.
Police’s Joanna Archer (5:15) won the female race ahead of Ashanti Scott (5:18) and Alicia Jack (5:25) respectively. Archer also won the 800m in 2:21 with Kezra Murray (2:21.8) chasing her to the finish line in another close finish. Ashanti Scott (2:29.3) finished third.
Quacy Morian won the male 800m race ahead of Tudor and Police’s Trevor Scotland. No times were available in this event as well. Police won the Women’s 4×100 metre relay race with GDF taking home the Men’s 4x100m title.
