A customs officer formerly attached to the Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) was yesterday,
jailed for three years after he was convicted for trafficking in cocaine in a mail bag destined for the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
Clive David, between April 9 and April 11, 2014 at GPOC, Robb Street, Georgetown, had 647 grams of cocaine in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Magistrate Fabayo Azore also ordered the convict to pay a fine of $1, 941,000.
Ranks attached to the police Narcotics Branch were conducting routine searches at the airport when they found the illegal substance in several envelopes inside a mail bag.
The bag was about to be loaded onto a Caribbean Airlines flight destined for New York.
The prosecution had contended that David confessed that he posted the envelopes knowing that the illicit substance was concealed inside.
David had told police that he had collected the envelopes from a “Yankee” to post to the USA and was promised US$1,000 remuneration.
It was revealed in court that David, of Princes, Street, Georgetown, had worked for nine years at the Guyana Revenue Authority, prior to his arrest.
