Goals either side of play from Chris Nelson and Shane Martin guided Stewartville
Secondary to a 2-1 victory over Zeeburg Secondary when the Digicel Schools Football Championship continued yesterday at the Leonora Track and Field Facility.
Both teams looked lackluster in the opening exchanges and failed to create any real scoring chances in the first 20 minutes. Stewartville had the first opportunity to go ahead, but Jamal Knights sent his shot wide from inside the area.
Zeeburg’s Kevin Baichandeen then fired his shot over the bar moments later. Baichandeen’s teammate Chris Prince then wasted a fair chance to put his team ahead with only the goalkeeper to beat from inside the area he wasted much time in taking a shot which allowed the defenders time to deny him.
However, Chris Nelson produced a brilliant solo effort to give Stewartville the lead in the 31st minute. He collected the ball from just over his opponents half and ran down the left side before waltzing his way into the box, beating goalkeeper Ganesh Jitlall to his right.
Gitlall produced two fine saves to deny Shane Martin and Jerrimiah Albert after the break, but Martin’s left foot strike found the back of the net from outside the box to extend the lead in the 49th minute.
Zeeburg looked more purposeful in the second half and created several chances before Baichandeen slotted home in the 50th minute to make it 2-1. The goal seemed to energise Zeeburg and several scoring opportunities came their way but shots went wide of goal.
Stewartville on the other hand were denied on several occasions by some smart work by Gitlall between the uprights, nevertheless they secured a spot in the next round. In other matches Rosignol Secondary beat Fort Wellington 2-1 at Mahaicony, Berbice High School overcame Manchester Secondary 3-2 at Burnham Park, Annandale thumped Bladen Hall 5-2 at Beterverwagting, Aurora got past Johanna Cecelia 3-1 at NOC in Essequibo and Wakapoa beat Eight of May 3-1 at Anna Regina.
