Antone Stanton netted a double to give Xenon Academy of East Bank Demerara hard
fought 4-3 victory over Friendship Secondary when the 6th Annual Digicel Schools nationwide football championship continued yesterday at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.
Xenon showed decent ball skills and had the better of the opening exchanges and went ahead in the 10th minute when Stanton scored from inside the area. Friendship almost found an equalizer moments later but Jomal Scott saw his shot from the right side of the box well saved by goalkeeper Usher Jones.
Xenon continued to dominate the proceedings and Stanton extended the lead in the 34th minute as Stanton’s header found the back of the net following a cross from the left side of the box; Xenon enjoyed a 2-0 lead at the break.
Friendship played with vigor in the second half and created several chances but Xenon’s defence stood firm. However, Lawrence McKenzie made it 2-1 with a 52nd minute strike from
outside the 18-yard box. Friendship almost drew level but Trevon Davidson’s shot from the right side of the area hit the cross bar.
Xenon stretched their lead in the 57th minute when Sean Williams beat Friendship goalkeeper Michael Williams after being one on one with the goalie. Three minutes later Jaheem Small scored Xenon fourth, neatly heading home a corner.
Despite trailing by three goals, Friendship continued to show determination, but their opponents back four stood well. Davidson reduced the deficit in the 68th with a strike from inside the area before converting a penalty in the 85th minute, but Xexon managed to maintain the advantage until the final whistle.
