One of the Chinese vessels, the M.V. Sabanto which usually plies the Supenaam to Parika route, has gone into dry dock to facilitate routine inspection and repairs. These are expected to be conducted over the next five weeks.
This development has now forced into operation, the M.V.Malali and the M.V. Makouria which are supposed to operate during the midday hours according to the tide. Whenever the tide is reasonable high the two boats would transport passengers and vehicles to Parika and back.
Two weeks ago a number of persons who arrived at the Supenaam ferry stelling for the 11 o’clock schedule, were forced to wait until the tide rose before the boat could have departed Supenaam for Parika.
The two Chinese boats, the M.V. Sabanto and the M.V.Kanawan were gifted to the government a few years ago.
One ran aground in some bushes at Wakenaam causing a number of passengers to be rescued by the speedboat. High tides floated it off the bank. (Yannason Duncan)
