Two months after a fatal accident at Coverden, East Coast Demerara claimed the lives of two persons, the General Manager of the Guyana Quartz Sand Inc. was yesterday released on a total of $400,000 bail after denying two counts of causing death by dangerous driving
Jason Bhaskaran, 23, of Track ‘B’ Timehri, East Coast Demerara is accused of driving motor vehicle PHH 8034 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Rudolph Bess. It was further alleged that he also caused the death of 16-year-old Hansranie Persaud by driving in a dangerous manner.
The accident occurred on April 17.
According to reports, Bess, 23, of Lot 620 Kaneville, East Bank Demerara and Persaud, 16, of Lot 478 Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara were killed after the motorcycle in which they were riding crashed into a pickup vehicle.
The accident reportedly occurred after they were returning home from a party at a wash bay in Soesdyke. It was reported that Bess’ skull was crushed while one of Persaud’s legs was severed.
The teenager is said to have sneaked out her parent’s house to attend the party with Bess whom her mother later learnt was her boyfriend.
Bhaskaran pleaded not guilty to both allegations after they were read to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The defendant was granted bail in the sum of $200,000 on each charge and was ordered to return to court on July 13, when he will appear before Magistrate Judy Latchman.
Police Prosecutor, Deniro Jones, did not oppose to bail for Bhaskaran and told the court that post mortem reports in favour of the deceased are still outstanding from the police file.
An attorney for the defendant informed the court that his client was released on $100,000 station bail, and had been co-operating with police throughout their investigations.
