.. two new wells to be commissioned- GWI boss
The residents of Diamond, East Bank Demerara, about 5,000 of them, had been without water for three weeks, since June 2. The problematic Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) Well in Diamond had yet again run into issues.
Chief Executive (CE) of GWI, Dr. Richard Van-West Charles, during a past press conference, yesterday, had noted that at the time GWI didn’t have any clarity on the issue at hand. He subsequently apologised for the level of service that the residents of Diamond had been receiving.
Dr. Van-West Charles said that since assuming his position at the helm of GWI last October, that specific Well in Diamond had been giving trouble last February.
According to the CE, the well casing in Diamond was made of carbon steel which was supposed to have a life span of 25 years and only lasted some five years before it started corroding. This problem he noted was recurring in 15 wells across the Coastal region of Guyana.
Due to the corrosion of the well, there was a rupture in the wall of the well which resulted in a shutdown of the only well in Diamond.
This issue, he added, was due to poor advice on part of the previous administration.
Dr. Van-West Charles during a press conference yesterday June 20, told members of the press that a temporary fix was done at the Diamond well and thus resumption of water supply was back to normal in the area.
He stated that a temporary sleeve made of PVC was fitted into the defective carbon steel casing and highlighted that the temporary fix would last some four months.
The four months he continued would allow for a new well to be constructed in order to more efficiently supply the Diamond/Grove populace with better quality and service of water.
As the Chief Executive had stated earlier this month, the one well in Diamond is not enough to supply the residents of that area and as a measure, two new wells are slated to be commissioned and constructed in the next year.
These wells are going to cost some $140 million each.
