Several matters arising out of the Georgetown’s Mayor and City Council were addressed
at a press conference held at City Hall, yesterday. One such issue was the purchasing of a tow truck which was highlighted by the Deputy Mayor Sherod Duncan as a purchase unknown to him.
Town Clerk, Royston King, in an interview following the press conference, explained that the purchase of the tow truck was authorized by the 2015 council. He went onto to relay that the council had initially experienced difficulty regarding procuring a duty free facility for the vehicle.
King explained that the tow truck will progress the council’s efforts in removing derelict vehicles occupying city space. Additionally, King noted that any vehicle whatsoever found to be occupying city spaces without authorization will be removed, and the tow truck will facilitate this.
Such vehicles will be towed away to the council’s Princes Street location. Owners of vehicles who wish to have their vehicles returned will have to pay a fine. In the event that the owners do not show up, those vehicles will be auctioned. He noted that the Laws of Guyana provide for such actions being taken and it is under that authority they will be doing such.
The purchase of the vehicle had come in for questioning after Deputy Mayor Sherod Duncan had made it public that the presence of the vehicle within the compound of City Hall was surprising to him.
The town clerk noted that the financing for the purchase was made available through the 2015 subvention to the council. According to King this is the reason for the Deputy Mayor not having knowledge about the purchase of the tow truck since his tenure began only this year.
According to the town clerk, “We couldn’t go around opening all previous contracts done by successive councils and informing everybody about everything that was done by successive councils.”
