Team Evolution’s Orville Hinds successfully defended the Castrol Father’s Day Road Race senior title when the 17th edition of the race was held yesterday on the West Demerara. Hinds’ opposition could not deter him from back to back wins even though the race route was shortened.
The Linden born rider completed the 34-mile race in One Hour 20 Minutes 53.01 Seconds comfortably winning the sprint home ahead of Junior Niles, Paul DeNobrega, Michael Anthony, Raynauth Jeffrey and Stephen Fernandes in that order.
The sprint prizes went to Anthony and Silvio Inniss with 2 apiece, while there was one each for Hinds, Jeffrey, Niles and Alanzo Ambrose.
Pedaling off at Wales on the West Bank of Demerara, the 35-cyclists apart from traversing the West Demerara Roadway also made their way into the new stretch of Road leading into Parfait Harmonie before going all the way to Uitvlugt and returning to the Demerara Harbour Bridge for the finish.
National Road Race and Time Trials queen, Claire Fraser-Green chalked up victory in the female category comfortably in a time of One Hour 44 Minutes 37 Seconds. Christine Matheson took the second place.
Another Road Race champion, Junior Niles who retained the Under-45 category on Saturday at the Guyana Cycling Federation 2016 National Championships, also made it two in a row in the Castrol event he won convincingly as he placed second overall to Hinds.
A new junior winner was crowned, Jornel Yearwood of Linden won from Andrew Hicks and Brighton John. Stephen Fernandes and Paul Chho-Wee-Nam placed 2nd and 3rd in the veteran’s category to Niles.
Ruling the roost among the mountain bike riders was Richard Charles from Stephan Gobin.
Castrol Brand Manager Seon Daniels was on hand to distribute the cash and trophies to all outstanding performers of the event which was organised by National Cycling Coach, Hassan Mohamed.
Attention will now be focused on the GCF Time Trials for seniors, juniors, juveniles and veterans on Saturday on the East Coast. The road race for seniors is set for Sunday around the outer circuit of the National Park and is expected to attract all the big guns locally and overseas based.
