Jun 19, 2016 Letters
Dear Editor,
I refer to a published letter in the Kaieteur News with the title, “will Glen Lall, Freddie Kissoon and Nigel Hughes do it?” in the edition of June 5, 2016. It was signed by a former army officer who chose not to be identified for reason he stated in his letter. This person describes his visit to Guyana for the 50th Anniversary and from his what he saw and heard, it has caused him to question the future performance of the APNU-AFC Coalition. He prefers to see a Guyana being led by a new party with Freddie Kissoon and Nigel Hughes at the helm
From reading this man’s letter, it is clear that he became despondent with his PNC friends who are now in power. It does not appear that he cares much for the AFC so he left it out of his thinking. But the AFC is failing like the PNC and the performance of both of these parties should pave the way for circumstances to bring out a new party. If you compare the performance of the APNU Ministers and the AFC, there is little difference if any. While I understand the army officer’s frustration with APNU, I feel the same with the AFC. The failure of three AFC Ministers are alarming – Moses Nagamootoo, Khemraj Ramjattan and the Agriculture Minister, Mr. Holder
I am an expatriate businessman who comes often to Guyana. I missed four years the past ten years. I did not come for three consecutive years – 2003, 2004, 2005. The crime situation was responsible for that. I did not come in 2013 because of business and medical reasons. I supported the AFC from its inception. I have given a couple of cents from time to time. But my cousin has been more generous. We come from Berbice and migrated long, long ago. I can tell you this; when my cousin says the AFC is not performing then it is not performing because this man couldn’t see any fault in the AFC when it was born until it got into power
Whereas the army officer sees the PNC as having failed Guyana after 2015, I see the same for the AFC. My biggest disappointment is the Prime Minister. I wake up each morning and read the newspapers and I wonder if Moses Nagamootoo isn’t ashamed at his performance. I ask myself time and time again, what is this man doing with his duties as Prime Minister? Even Sam Hinds had policy-making duties and he was all over Guyana trying. This is not meant to be personal. I admire the long contribution of Moses Nagamootoo. But all of Guyana expected better. I want to remain anonymous in this letter but if I ever see him in the US, I hope we can talk man to man and I would ask him to explain what he has done so far for Guyana as Prime Minister
From the way I see it, the call by the army officer in his letter is timely. Guyana needs to have another political party. I cannot agree with his choice of Freddie Kissoon as presidential candidate. Idealists like Mr. Kissoon will never make good politicians. As the army officer wrote, Kissoon is unique to Guyana in his multi-racial activism and human rights legacy. He is Guyana’s Don Quixote and should remain in that niche for the rest of his life. He was born for that time of work. As an Indian, I would support Nigel Hughes as the next President of Guyana
Nigel Hughes has all the qualities that would make him a competent, caring president with ideas for changing Guyana. My belief is that if he succeeds, he will eclipse the legacy of Burnham and Jagan. I would urge this outstanding son of the soul to start thinking about the presidency. The vacuum will get deeper everyday and Mr. Hughes will need to prepare. I read about the parking machine fiasco and my mind went back years and years ago to Mr. Corbin and the electricity barge. Guyana certainly needs new leadership. I wish Freddie Kissoon could do it but philosophical thinkers are too idealistic. Nigel Hughes can do it and I await to see how things unfold next year because right now, Guyana needs good leadership
