The New Amsterdam based Flying Ace Cycling Club (FACC) has selected its cyclist that will be tasked with carrying the club colours in the 2016 National Cycling Championship orgnised by the Guyana Cycling Federation’s which is set to pedal off today at Mahaicony Circuit, East Coast Demerara.
The athletes named are England based Franco Crawford, Gary Benjamin, Wasim Hassnu and Syborne Fernandes who will participate in the veterans’ categories. Representing the club in the junior division are Zaman Khan and Curtis Dey. Female cyclist Whitney Poyer and Tamika Teixeira will compete among the females.
The day activity is set to commence at 10:00 hrs with the female time trials. Also slated for today are the ladies, boys, juniors, juveniles, male veterans U-45 and Over-45 as they compete in the road races.
The females will be competing for 21.2-miles or four laps while the juveniles will ride for 26.5-mile or five laps.
The junior boys as well as the veterans are set to battle over 42.4 miles or eight laps.
The winner of each category will be presented with championship jerseys compliments of the Guyana Cycle Association of North America.
The championships will continue on June 25 with the individual time trials for juvenile and junior boys as well as the veterans and the men Elite riders.
The curtains are expected to come down on June 26 when the action switches to the National Park when the country’s Elite cyclists are expected to battle for top honours in a 30 laps affair.
Transportation to Mahaicony for today’s action will leave the Ministry of Sport, Homestretch Avenue at 07:45hrs.
