After several weeks of intense and exciting action the teams that have distinguished themselves with winning performances are preparing to throw down the gauntlet when the Annual Mayor’s Cup football competition resumes at several venues in Georgetown and its environs.
Starting Sunday July 3 activities shift to the West Coast at the Den Amstel Community Centre Ground where Pouderoyen take on Camptown at 17:00hrs. Two hours later, Uitvlugt tackle Police and later in the evening, at 21:00hrs, Den Amstel play Riddim Squad. One day later the action shifts to the GFC Ground Bourda for a double header where Santos FC play Beavers FC, while Western Tigers tangle with Eagles out of Linden. The action commences at 18:00hrs.
The players rest for a few days before entering the quarter-finals stage on Saturday July 9 when Cougars will take on the winner of the Uitvlugt/Police encounter, while Ann’s Grove battle with the winner of the Den Amstel/Riddim Squad duel. These matches will be played at the Victoria Ground ECD.
Another quarter finals fixture is billed for Sunday July 10 when Federal Winners’ Connection tackle the winner of the Santos/Eagles shindig shortly before the winner of the Western Tigers/Eagles affair will take on the winner of the Camptown/Pouderoyen match.
The semi finals commence on Sunday July 7 and will see the respective winners of the quarter finals matches battling for a place in the finals which takes place at the GFC Ground along with the third place playoff on Sunday July 24.
The teams are competing for the Mayor’s Cup and a first prize of $700,000 donated by Aruwai Resort, second $300,000 and the Ansa McAl trophy, third $200,000 and the John Fernandes trophy and fourth $100,000 and the Ministry of State trophy. Ricks and Sari has also donated hampers which will go to the winning team. The tournament’s top goal scorer will get a three piece suite compliments of AH&L Kissoon Furniture Store.
Sponsors on board are Top Brandz of High and Broad Streets Charlestown, distributor of the popular Interstate batteries, Aruwai Resort of the Essequibo River is one of the main contributors to this tournament with notable help from Ansa McAl, Minister of State Joe Harmon and his ministry, John Fernandes, Ricks and Sari and AH&L Kissoon.
