A pregnant mother of eight and a security guard were yesterday arraigned before City Magistrate Judy Latchman to answer to a drug trafficking charge, when they appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is alleged that on June 15, last, at Nutmeg Street, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, Mohamed Duke, 43, of 1988 Festival City, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown and Sharda Mohamed, 47, of Lot 31 ‘B’ Field Sophia had 2.738 kilograms of cannabis sativa (marijuana) in their possession for the purpose of trafficking.
They both denied the allegation read to them.
Mohamed was released on $250,000 bail and Duke was remanded to prison. They were represented by Attorney Melvin Duke.
The lawyer told the court that on the day in question, police searched a business located at the aforementioned address and allegedly found the illicit substance.
He said that his clients have denied ownership of the drug. Attorney Duke told the court that Mohamed was a visitor to the premises when she was arrested by police. He added that Duke is a security guard at the location which houses a car rental, internet café and apartments.
Police Prosecutor, Kerry Bostwick objected to bail for the defendants. He said that police ranks acting on a tip off went to the location where they found the compressed marijuana in the kitchen.
He added that Duke admitted to ownership of the drug, while Mohamed told police she had visited the place to drop off some food.
They will return to court on July 13.
