Dear Editor,
Disability is a physical or mental condition that limits a person’s movement sense, or activities. Some persons are born disable while some becomes disable due to accidents or medical illnesses that makes them disable. Some of the challenges persons with disability face are discrimination, access to work, transportation and buildings just to name a few. As an advocate and a parent of a disabled child, it is my humble opinion that the two biggest challenges persons with disability face are governmental support and being understood not only by society but also by parents & family members.
As caretakers of these individuals, they come a point in life we, the caretakers will die and they are left alive and still have to be cared for so it is important to pay keen attention, observe their every move what are their likes and dislikes, do they have any academic or trade skills to help them become independent to work.
This is where parental support is important. Parents & family members need to stop saying these persons can’t do anything and get them involve in everything that can help them be independent. They cannot get these things done so it is the responsibilities of parents/ caretakers to do so. Family members needs to understand it is very challenging for parents/ caretakers of persons with disability and support them in any way they can because along with teaching them independence.
Before I speak about governmental support, I must say disability comes in different forms and vary from mild to severe meaning some persons with disability are eligible to work while some are severely disabled and can’t do anything for themselves. What are they supposed to do when their parents/ caretakers dies? Not all family members are prepared to or can take care of disable persons.
When parents grow old with disabled children and can’t work anymore, how do they maintain a disable person? This is where governmental support is important. Only they can help in such situations. Is there any system in place to deal with such individuals? Will they have any and if yes how long form now will it be in place I know there certain things set in place for children with disability but what about the adults not only the ones born disabled but adults who becomes disabled by accident & other medical illnesses? Are they responsible for being the way they are? As an advocate and a parent, I speak not only for my child but for every person with disability living in Guyana. What does the future holds for them.
