Dickson’s hat-trick sets up St. John’s College win over Richard Ishmael
By Franklin Wilson
Urged on by their home fans and fellow students, Golden Grove, Coached by Golden Jaguar
Dwain Jacobs broke the jinx of not winning their first game yesterday when they inflicted a 5-2 thumping on the Institute of Business Education (IBE) when the East Coast leg of the Digicel Schools’ Football Championships continued yesterday at the Golden Grove ground, East Coast Demerara.
The home team, playing just a stone’s throw away from their school, started off a bit slow and had to erase a one goal deficit initially before asserting themselves against the IBE which started the match at a fast pace.
IBE’s Shemar Scott gave his side the lead 9 minutes into the match as they made their early dominance count. But finding themselves trailing on home turf triggered the competitive side of Golden Grove which not only clawed back in terms of equalizing but gradually took control of proceedings.
Their only threat on the IBE team was Scott and once they kept him out of the fray, it was smooth sailing for them.
Simon Jones found the equalizer for the home team in the 14th minute and his teammate Quincy Jingoree who gave them the lead in the 22nd minute. But that did not deter the IBE lads; Scott latched on to the ball mid way in the Golden Grove half and as everyone suspected, his nimbleness and control was too much for the defenders to handle, he dribbled past them and hammered home the equalizer that locked the scores at 2-2; it was game on from the 23rd minute.
Golden Grove, recognizing that Scott was their main threat, regrouped and changed up tactics as they sought to keep him out of the game. Even as that plan was being executed, Golden Grove restored their one goal advantage when Isaiah Anderson scored their third and his first in the 28th minute.
Half time the score was 3-2 in favour of the home team.
The second half saw most of the play concentrated in the IBE half of the field as Golden Grove dominated to the extent that the visiting team only managed a few raids in the Golden Grove half of the field.
Golden Grove fired in two unanswered goals, both coming off the boot of Emeil Daniels in the 57th and 79th minute, his first was a beautifully executed right foot volley on the end of an equally well directed cross from the right side.
The score line could have been even more woeful for IBE were in not for the many near
misses and off sides by the excited Golden Grove lads. The end result was encouraging however as they were able to win convincingly to advance, something they did not achieve in 2015 when they were sent packing by BV 2-0.
Meanwhile, over at the GDF ground in the City, the match between St. John’s College and Richard Ishmael Secondary ended 4-1 in favour of the former thanks to a hat-trick from Darien Dickson.
The match was reduced to 60 minutes owing to the raining season which curtailed ground preparation in a timely manner. However, the players were not daunted by the late start and sought to give of their best in the time that was allowed.
Dickson was on target in the 12th, 20th and 38th minute, while teammate Isaiah McPherson netted in the 48th minute. Richard Ishmael’s consolation goal was scored by Matthew Lyttle in the 22nd minute.
No matches will be contested today with one set for tomorrow at Orealla where the home school, Orealla Secondary will entertain their counterparts from Siparuta from 15:30hrs.
