It was a case of sweet revenge for West Demerara Secondary in their clash against Patentia Secondary in the 6th annual Digicel Schools Football Championship which continued yesterday, at the Leonora Synthetic Track facility.
Booted out of the competition last year by Patentia, West Demerara turned the tables this time with a hard fought 4-2 penalty kicks win after coming from behind to earn an exciting 2-2 draw in regulation time.
It seemed as though they would be condemned to a similar fate when Patentia took the lead through a cracking free kick taken from about 30 metres on the left flank by Eon King following a foul. It came after eight minutes of play.
Needing to respond and respond quickly, Glenroy Duncan did so in the 14th minute when he raced on to a floated cross from the right side that disected two defenders and landed perfectly for him and he made no mistake, placing it to the left of the advancing goalkeeper to level the proceedings.
However, King was back in action in the 18th minute, courtesy of a penalty after an opposing player was guilty of handling the ball in the ‘Red Zone’ and the Referee rightly signaled for a spot kick which he buried nonchalantly for a 2-1 lead.
Both teams played with zest and mounted numerous raids in each other’s half with West Demerara coming close to equalising, but a brilliant save by the Patentia goalkeeper kept them slightly ahead.
