Dear Editor,
The re-vision of the Amerindian Act critical to addressing Amerindian Land Rights – Minister Allicock GINA, June 1, 2016 ) is a welcoming approach by the government that it is serious to correct and tend to the injustices caused to Indigenous peoples because of the indefensibility of the Amerindian Act to protect.
The counteraction by the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples Affairs will hopefully create “The Balance” and eliminate major obstacles caused by the unilateral and unjustifiable actions of the court and more so, the State of Guyana. Fifty years of Independent Guyana, the state has continue to reserve the right to grant a licence or permit to an investor on Amerindian titled and traditional lands without their consent much to the disadvantage of these communities. It is unacceptable and disrespectful in modern day societies and contravenes 149G of its own constitution.
Editor, it is an understatement by the minister to not recognized other Indigenous leaders who have been constantly advocating on behalf of their communities to share the spotlight and credibility as the South Rupununi Indigenous Group. Indeed, it is an opportunity for Indigenous peoples, organizations and stakeholders to work together and reconcile their differences. However, Free Prior and Informed Consent must be adhered to and implemented if the ministry is going to be the “Torch Bearer” of this policy.
Finally, I would like to extend an invitation to the Minister of Indigenous Peoples Affairs to visit the Middle Mazaruni communities to have a “collaborative” and advance knowledge of issues and inputs to make the new “ Indigenous Peoples Act” more fair and transparent while respecting the rights of others.
