The Commissioner of Police (Ag) David Ramnarine, yesterday, hosted a press briefing to address the June 4, grenade attack on Kaieteur News in the Commissioner’s Office at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary.
Ramnarine took some time out to express his condolences and sympathies on behalf of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to the media fraternity on the death of Kaieteur News’s Assistant Editor Dale Andrews.
He noted that the late Dale Andrews was one of the most important journalists in Guyana’s media and a friend, confidant among other things to a lot of members at all levels in the GPF.
The acting Commissioner of Police labelled the grenade attack a dastardly and cowardly act by criminal elements. He stated that during the initial stages of the investigation, they (GPF) had “deduced, based on statements that the motive was really to drive some fear, to cause some damage, though unconcerned whether it was damage to the person, hurt to the person, injury to the person, cause some physical damage, but in essence to drive fear.”
He continued, “As we (GPF) understand, this plan was basically contemplated on June 2, was developed on June 3, and executed on the night of June 4. It is unfortunate that thus far, we have not been able to zero in on the intellectual authors of this heinous crime.”
“As acting Commissioner I have taken due cognizance of the condemnation and of the various degrees and levels of concern not only from our government but from members of the diplomatic corp, members of the business community and all and sundry.”
Ramnarine said that he received quite a few calls and that from those calls he could feel the lack of confidence, or the element of doubt as to “whether or not we would be able to break this matter.”
He added that earlier yesterday three persons were charged and subsequently remanded to prison in relation to the grenade attack on Kaieteur News.
He vowed, though, that “this is not the end of this investigation, we still have a wanted bulletin out and there are maybe, one or two other persons of interest in this matter that we are continuing to work diligently to find, whoever they are and to bring them to justice.”
“This investigation, when we assess it, was really an investigation that epitomizes conscientiousness, diligence and resilience of criminal investigators” Ramnarine stated.
The acting Commissioner highlighted that in the absence of the Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum, he assumed responsibility for the investigation. There was efficient, as well as the invaluable partnership between ‘A’ Division and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) that was vital to breaking the case, he said.
Commissioner (Ag) Ramnarine reiterated that as Commander of ‘A’ Division, Clifton Hicken, had stated at a recent press conference; “we will get to the bottom of this and the chips will fall where they have to fall!”
