Dear Editor,

Due to the decency of the Deputy Mayor of Georgetown, the public has been made aware of the current attempts to improperly shove a parking system down the throats of residents and visitors to the capital city.
How could this new Council be sucked in to the ways of the past that lacked accountability and transparency? How could they subscribe to the awarding of a contract for tens of millions of United States dollars for the installation of a parking meter system without a bidding process that would have seen expressions of interest coming from both local and overseas companies of repute?.
Why the rush now to put in this parking system when citizens are already suffering from the slowdown in the economy? How could they engage in such a large project before a forensic audit is done at City Hall?
The government needs to step in and have this entire initiative reviewed before it is too late, as the last government had to when similar attempts were being made by the previous Council with this same meter parking company.
Has anyone visited the locations where this company claims it has deployed these parking systems, are they in possession of testimonials from other cities recommending this company? Is the City Hall exempt from tender board procedures?
Why does City Hall insist on running Georgetown like a town from the wild west back in those days? If the city is seriously interested in finding a solution to the traffic congestion and parking difficulties in the city then maybe they could consider building parking garages in the city and also make it easier for people to leave their cars at home by investing in public transit and pedestrian avenues.

The PPP gave away Guyana’s forests and other resources to foreigners who made out like gods and kings in exchange for kickbacks. Is the City Council giving away prime road space to ‘foreigners’ who will make out like gods and kings in exchange for kickbacks? The question has to be asked, because there was no Invitation to Public Public tender for anyone to bid based on advertised specifications of a parking meter system.

And now we have a report of a fake address give on Park Avenue in Manhattan as the headquarters for the contractor! This reminds of Fip Motilall’s Florida address turning out to be a store that sold West Indian and religious articles, or like the computer store in Brooklyn that supplied computers to the PPP regime, but the store turned out to be a barber shop on the ground floor on Fulton Street (a Guyanese neighborhood), with folks (maybe Guyanese) living above the store.

Why are Coalition elements copying Jagdeo-Ramotar regime style governance styles? There appears to be no originality, whether it is in the form of government programs for development or straight-up corruption! The thing is, these guys can do better than this…if they really try!
