Football fans along the East Coast corridor and its environs were treated to three action packed encounters when the Mayor’s Cup football tournament continued at Victoria ground ECD last Sunday evening.
In the opening encounter Cougars denied BV Triumph 1 nil after S. Parris tucked in the lone goal of the match. Ann’s Grove emulated Cougars’ feat with a similar victory over Grove Hi Tech with N. Denny making the difference for the winners.
The final match of the night saw Linden’s champion team, Federal Winners’ Connection triumphing over ECD champion team, Victoria Kings, on the back of goals off the boot of Rawle Gittens and Harold David.
The tournament has produced some exciting duels and is now down to the last 16 teams with approximately 8 days of riveting football on the cards. Those triumphant teams will now progress into the quarter finals and then the semi-finals in order to determine which unit plays for the top prize of $700,000 and a trophy donated by Aruwai Resort. The second place team pockets $300,000 and the Ansa McAl trophy, while the third place team carts off $200,000 and the John Fernandes trophy. The fourth place finishers will receive $100,000 and the Ministry of State trophy. Ricks and Sari has also donated hampers which will go to the winning team, while tournament’s top goal scorer will get a three piece suite compliments of AH&L Kissoon Furniture Store.
The organizers are also grateful for the sponsorship packages donated by several entities the likes of Aruwai Resorts, Ansa McAl, John Fernandes and Minister of State Joseph Harmon. The Government of Guyana has also rendered support as has Macorp, Busta, Cummings Electrical, Bakewell, IPA, China Trading, E Networks, Namilco and BK International.
Former National football coach, Lennox Arthur, is the tournament coordinator ever since the tournament commenced 22 years ago.
