Thinking that he was meeting his girlfriend, a 25-year-old man who had killed mechanic Pooran Baljit during a robbery rushed to the Georgetown seawalls on Saturday, only to find that he had a ‘date’ with the cops instead.
Police had been on the trail of the unemployed Timehri Squatting area man, who was the prime suspect in the murder of 25-year-old Baljit, who was stabbed to death in the bedroom of his Lot 57 Madewini, Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara home.
Police said that after his arrest, the unemployed labourer admitted to killing Baljit, who had awoken to find him burglarising his home.
Police have recovered a mobile phone that the suspect dropped at the scene, as well as a bloodstained jersey belonging to the killer.
Yesterday, the suspect also took them to an area where he had concealed a bag with the murder weapon and a toque mask.
Detectives confirmed that the suspect sustained cuts to his right hand when Baljit awoke and put up a desperate fight for his life. Kaieteur News understands that the alleged killer knew his victim and feared that the man would have recognized him.
He also told detectives that he had once worked as a labourer near to his victim’s home. He was also aware that Baljit slept at night with his bedroom window open.
On Thursday night, he allegedly entered Baljit’s bedroom via the window. The burglar reportedly put a laptop computer in a bag and had just picked up another computer, when his victim awoke.
The two men began to struggle and the intruder repeatedly stabbed Baljit, but was himself slashed on the right hand. He fled with a computer and other items.
Baljit was found dead at around 21:00 hrs after his parents heard him screaming in his bedroom.
Police had at first suspected that robbery might not have been the primary motive.
But they got a break in the case after finding a phone that the intruder had dropped. They also received information that the suspect was seen with bloody clothing and with his hand cut. He’d reportedly told persons who asked that he got the injuries during a fight.
However police were unable to find the suspect after checking at his home. But on Saturday, they got a female to call him and arrange a meeting at the Georgetown seawalls.
The suspect turned up to find the police waiting for him.
He is likely to be charged this week after a postmortem is conducted on the victim.
