New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI) playing for the first time and surprise package New Amsterdam Multilateral booked their places in the final of the 2016 edition of the Patrick “Patto” April Inter Schools U18 Memorial knockout football competition.
The tournament, which is organized by the Hearts of Oak Masters Football Club (HOOMFC) and sponsored by the Guyana Police Force B Division, saw the two teams scoring contrasting victories in their matches which was played at The All Saints Scott Church ground.
In the first encounter NATI had to dig deep in edging past Tutorial Academy Secondary (TASS) 3-1 on penalty kicks after their closely fought encounter ended 1-1 at the completion of the 70 minutes full time.
Scoring for NATI was Kellon Codogan, while Orin Glenn responded for TASS who was playing their first game after being granted a bye to the semifinal.
In the next encounter the highly fancied Berbice High School, put on a lackluster performance as they squandered a number of goal scoring chances in an upset 3-2 loss to NAMS. The BHS lads dominated most of the play, but allowed NAMS to score on spot kicks or counterattacks.
The goal scorers for NAMS were Rashad David, Shaquan Spencer and Junior Seepersaud. The BHS got their goals from Tozu Aron and Shamar Arrindell.
Seven schools participated in the 11 a side affair. The schools are: New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary School (NAMS), Berbice High School (BHS), Berbice Educational Institute (BEI), Vryman’s Erven Secondary School (VESS), Tutorial Academy Secondary School (CSS), Canje Secondary School (CSS) and New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI).
The presentation ceremony will take place immediately after the completion of the final.
The top teams will be presented with trophies and other accolades, while there will also be prizes for the top individual performers including the most valuable player, best goalkeeper, best defender, the best midfielder and best striker.
Patrick April or “Patto” as he was known, was a member of the Guyana Police Force and a popular football player and butcher in Berbice and Guyana. He went on to represent Berbice on a number of occasions at various levels of the game. Commander of Police B Division Ian Amsterdam, who formed a strong defensive line up alongside April in the police team, is expected to be on hand to participate in the presentation ceremony.
April, who was a fearless defensive player, once formed a potent combination with the Humphrey, Alphonso, Ford, Inniss, Samuels and Bowry siblings among others. (Samuel Whyte)
