Police have reportedly made a major breakthrough in their investigations into the grenade attack on Kaieteur News, with the arrest of a man that is believed to have handed over the fragmentation grenade and cash to the individuals who threw the device.
While investigators are reluctant to say much about the case, Kaieteur News was told that the individual was taken into custody yesterday. An individual who had borrowed the car that was used in the attack is also said to be among those detained. This would reportedly bring to three the number of suspects in custody.
Kaieteur News was told that investigators will approach the Police Legal Advisor for guidance on the possibility of laying charges against two of the suspects.
Among those still at large is 20-year-old Shemar Wilson, called ‘Abdue,’ for whom police issued a wanted bulletin on Friday.
Wilson is said to be from Lot 43 North Sophia, Georgetown, and from Lot 51 West La Penitence, Georgetown. Police are said to be also looking for a close associate of Wilson’s.
Investigators are even more convinced that the silver-grey Toyota Spacio that they impounded in Norton Street is the one from which the fragmentation grenade was thrown.
Kaieteur News has received information that three persons, including the driver, were in the vehicle. Prior to the attack, the occupants were seen parked in James Street, Albouystown. It is believed that they drove past Kaieteur News twice before returning to James Street.
Minutes later, one of the men exited the vehicle and smeared mud on the rear number plate before the men drove off.
After tossing the grenade, the men headed north down Saffon Street, but later crashed in the vicinity of Norton Street and Mandela Avenue. Three men, including an individual in a hooded garment, reportedly fled from the car.
The investigation is being spearheaded by ‘A’ Division Commander Clifton Hicken and ranks from the Major Crimes Unit. A large team of detectives is said to be on the case.
Investigators have been tight-lipped on the possible identity of the planner(s) and the motive for the attack.
Video footage from a Kaieteur News CCTV camera shows the grey Toyota Spacio, which is heading north down Saffon Street, slowing as it approaches Mr. Lall’s vehicle. The vehicle then accelerated after the grenade was thrown.
The grenade attack, which was carried out as Kaieteur News was holding a wake for its Assistant Editor Dale Andrews, has been condemned both locally and internationally.
Kaieteur News publisher Glenn Lall expressed thanks to the public whose information has assisted the police.
Anyone with information that may be of help to the police and could also lead to the arrest of Shemar Wilson may contact the police on telephone numbers 225-6411, 225-227, 225-8196, 227-1149, 226-7065, 911 or the nearest Police Station. All information will be treated with the strictest confidence.

COMMENT: I did blog that this was a failed grenade-for-hire hit, but with so many unknown bit players, it certainly was amateurish in orchestration and execution. Assuming the police have the right people, the ultimate objective has to be :MOTIVE! Clearly, the use of a grenade as a weapon of choice does raise the public interest in the spiraling rise in dangerous and deadly crimes.
What the police have to find out now who give him the money and the grenade
