Utilising home field to their advantage, the two entrants from nearby Tiger Bay community, situated no more that 200 metres from the venue registered emphatic victories on Friday evening, at the Parade ground on
Middle and Carmichael Streets.
However, of the two victories, none was bigger than the 4-2 win by Holmes Street over defending champion Sparta Boss, the first major upset of the competition to date.
Playing in the Ministry of Health-sponsored Soft Shoe Football Competition with the theme ‘Stop Gender-based Violence’ the Tiger Bay unit displayed no fear for their more established opponents and encouraged by the partisan support from the residents of their community took the lead in the second minute through Jamal Blackman, who fired past the goalkeeper to his right.
Exhibiting the skill and teamwork necessary for this format of the game, Akeem Saul made it 2-0 in the 12th minute after streaming down centre-field to reach on to a pass from the back and finished clinically past the advancing keeper.
One minute later, Sparta Boss managed to reduce the deficit through Eusi Phillips, who hammered a free kick into the top left hand corner past a surprised goalkeeper and the scoreline remained unchanged at the break.
Coming out in the second period, Saul picked up from where he left off when his ferocious right-footer hit the goalkeeper’s hands, but still managed to sail over the goalline to complete a brace.
Dominating most of the possession, Holmes Street looked like every time they had the ball something special would happen and Blackman working beautifully in tandem with Saul duplicated his teammate’s effort when he hit a well placed shot past the keeper, before Sparta Boss’s Sheldon Shepherd netted just before full time.
Earlier, Channel-9 Warriors defeated Campbellville 4-1. Joshua Fiffee lashed in a pair in the 15th and 17th minutes, while Ken Wilson, also scored twice in the 20th and 30th minutes.

Roberts’ goals came in the 18th, 21st and 23rd minutes.
