The action promises to be fierce today at the Victoria ground on the East Coast of Demerara when play in the Annual Mayor’s Cup football tournament continues with a triple header card.
Today’s script will be written by BV Triumph and Cougars, who battle in the opening encounter from 5:00pm. The action continues at 7:00pm with Ann’s Grove of the East Coast challenging Grove Hi Tech of the East Bank of Demerara. The latter side will be led by the talented Joel Dick who will hope to cause much problems for the Ann’s Grove lads.
The nightcap from 9:00pm will feature a clash between home side Victoria Kings against Federal Winners Connection of Linden, which is a meeting of the respective area champions. Know fighters Victoria Kings will depend on Aubrey Gibson and Winston Pompey to spearhead their challenge. Marmaleque Davidson, a young player with immense talent will take the fight for the Linden team. Davidson would be well remembered for his exploits in the Digicel Schools tournament over the last two years. He has graduated admirably to the senior ranks.
The tournament is down to its last 16 teams. The other teams in this stage are Camptown, Santos, Pouderoyen, Beavers, Cougars, Riddim Squad, Western Tigers, Den Amstel, Uitvlugt and Eagles of Linden.
Sponsors on board so far are Top Brandz of High and Broad Streets Charlestown, distributor of the popular Interstate batteries, Aruwai Resort of the Essequibo River is one of the main contributors to this tournament with notable help from Ansa McAl, Minister of State Joe Harmon and his ministry, John Fernandes, Ricks and Sari and AH&L Kissoon.
The teams are competing for the Mayor’s Cup and a first prize of $700,000 donated by Aruwai Resort, second $300,000 and the Ansa McAl trophy, third $200,000 and the John Fernandes trophy and fourth $100,000 and the Ministry of State trophy. Ricks and Sari has also donated hampers which will go to the winning team. The tournament’s top goal scorer will get a three piece suite compliments of AH&L Kissoon Furniture Store.
The tournament is coordinated by Lennox Arthur, former National footballer and later Coach, who has been behind this tournament for 22 years.
