Chief Executive of the Guyana Water Inc. (GWI), Dr. Richard Van West-Charles during a recent interview
with Kaieteur News stated that despite the recent rainfalls in Region Nine GWI remains committed to ensuring there is sufficient water supply in that Region.
The rains signalled the end of the El Nino drought.
Last April, Dr. Van West-Charles had stated that due to the then ongoing drought throughout Region Nine, GWI had started the initiative of drilling wells to service 50 villages across the region.
He noted that due to President David Granger’s “Call and stress for GWI to address the inequities of Region Nine”, GWI will be looking at Region Nine in a more strategic way.
He added that GWI had a meeting with some of the Toshaos (Leaders of Villages) of Region Nine and decided to pay some maintenance technicians to train people from the various villages across the South, North and central Rupununi to work at the various GWI wells and plants that will be established.
He noted that the individuals will be provided with the necessary knowledge and basic equipment needed to facilitate the efficient operations of those wells throughout the Rupununi region.
He added that there is going to be a main GWI office in the Region in the near future.
Dr. Van West Charles stated that there are three to four wells that have already been drilled. He emphasized that GWI is going to continue extensive work to provide the residents of Region Nine with quality service and quality water.
