Under the theme “Blood Connects Us All” the National Blood Transfusion Service of Guyana yesterday held an event in honour of those who give the gift of life. The event held in the GRA parking lot on Lamaha Road was planned to
commemorate World Blood Donors Day which will be on June 14, last.
The Director (Ag) of NBTS, Dr. Pedro Lewis, said, “We at the blood bank, every year at this time, try to appreciate our donors by doing something for them, because we know we cannot replicate blood. The only way we can get it is by voluntary donation.”
Lewis highlighted the importance of voluntary donors. He expressed thanks to some organisations which have maintained a relationship with his entity. He expressed that NBTS receives assistance from religious bodies, non-governmental organisations, the Guyana Revenue Authority and Red Cross just to name a few. At the event, persons were also given a chance to donate blood.
When asked how persons can donate blood with NBTS, he said that “Anytime, anybody can come in and donate blood; we don’t discriminate. We take blood from persons aged 16 to 65.” He warned that persons aged 16 and 17 would need parental consent before blood is taken from them. The Blood Bank is open Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:00 hours and 18:30 hours. On Saturdays it is open from 9:00 hours to 15:00 hours.
The Director (Ag) stated that one of the challenges which they will always face is to have a ready supply. He added, “One of our mandates is to educate the doctors to use blood properly. We try to prevent the blood from being expired; we want it to be used.”
He advised that at least one percent of the population should be voluntary donors. He encourages that persons should always be willing to donate since blood only lasts 35 days.
