Stewartville recorded the first upset in the Stag Beer sponsored West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) Senior League which continued last weekend at the Den Amstel Ground.
The West Demerara based side toppled their West Bank counterparts 2-0 thanks to goals from Paul Hector in the 54th minute and Orette Stephenson in the 67th minute of their feature clash on Sunday afternoon last.
The opening match saw Golden Warriors edging Vegae Boys 2-1 in a match that produced end to end action with the losers striking first in the 18th minute through an Alvin Benjamin goal. But Golden Warriors struck back in the 24th minute when Shakel Brisport evened the score.
The exchanges continued evenly but it was the Warriors that finally broke the deadlock with the winning goal in the 72nd minute off the boot of Orette Stephenson.
On Saturday, Pouderoyen ran away 5-3 winners over a tough Young Achievers. Both teams played enterprising football and did not ease in their offensive ambitions. Pouderoyen got their goals from Dwayne St. Kitts who netted twice in the 4th, 66th; Kayode King 46th; Morgan Denny 63rd and Marvin Frank in the 77th minute.
Young Achievers’ Lloyd Prince scored all the goals for his team in the 6th minute from the penalty spot, 30th and 50th minute but his efforts alone was not enough.
Eagles United soared to a big 5-1 triumph against Wales United on account of a double each
from Stephan Griffith (1st, 72nd), Olanzo Henry (8th, 60th) and Chris Macey in the 63rd minute. Wales got their lone goal from Kelvin Roberts in the 65th minute.
Matches will continue this weekend at the same venue including the NAMILCO/GFF Flour Power National U-17 League.
Tomorrow’s first match is an U-17 clash from 12:00hrs between Slingerz and Wales United, this would be followed by two a Stag Senior League matches, first up between Beavers and Wales with the main event featuring Den Amstel and Vegae Boys.
On Sunday, the Under-17 match will see Den Amstel opposing Eagles with senior play between Jetty Gunners against Pouderoyen from 13:30hrs with the final match between Uitvlugt and Young Achievers.
