– Victim beaten and left for dead
Carjackers were forced to abandon a car Tuesday night after their victim—a taxi driver reportedly threw his remote starter (keys) in a trench at Plum Park, Sophia, when the men pounced on him.
It is unclear how many persons attacked 44-year-old Gladwin Brandis, but reports are that the persons might have hired him to take them into Sophia.
It is believed that the father of five picked up his attackers on the road, since the last job he got from the base–Green Ice was around 19:00 hrs on Tuesday.
Brandis was severely beaten and left for dead in the back seat of his Toyota Allion, bearing registration number HC 6253. He was discovered in an unconscious state around 06:00 hrs yesterday by persons in the area.
The police and the base were notified and he was taken to the hospital.
At the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) yesterday, his wife, Nicola Brandis, said that she last spoke with him around 17:00 hrs on Tuesday just before he left home to go out and work.
“I called him a few times and I didn’t get him but I didn’t think anything of it because he had to go to the cricket so I say he was probably at the stadium. But around (22:00hrs) I called back and all his phones were off,” the woman said.
After the man failed to return home yesterday, his wife said that she called and informed family members who immediately started to look for him.
“While looking, we hear that someone called into the base and say that there was a car parked in Sophia and that a man was in the back seat so his brother went and saw it was him,” Mrs. Brandis said.
Kaieteur News was told that the father of five was rushed to the GPHC by his brother and police. Up to press time he was in an unconscious state.
Nicola Brandis said that her husband was covered in mud when his sibling found him. Police believed that the man might have been beaten and thrown out of his vehicle by the carjackers after which they (bandits) drove off but had to abandon the car when it stopped.
“Because the driver threw away his remote starter, they couldn’t have driven far so they had to abandon the car. The driver probably saw his car and managed to crawl in the back seat,” a police source said.
The police are reviewing surveillance footage in the area.

What will it take for the out to lunch law enforcement arm to recognize that Sophia has emerged as a new breeding ground for many of the young criminals engaged in street crimes making news? How about setting up a mobile command police outpost in the area as a deterrent?
Then again, maybe the coalition does not want to be accused of stereotyping the community the way it does not want to be accused of political witchunting crooks who operated during the Jagdeo-Ramotar era but are still employed by the coalition. Guyana is slowly sinking while leaders are slowly thinking.
