MoH ‘Stop Gener-based Violence’ Soft Shoe Football Competition…
The wet conditions failed to put a damper on the second night of action in the Petra Organisation- organised Ministry of Health sponsored Soft Shoe Football Competition which continued on Monday with some exciting
matches providing plenty of entertainment for the large turnout of spectators.
Played under the ‘Stop Gender-based Violence’ theme, at the Ministry of Health ground on Brickdam and Vlissingen Road, North Ruimveldt and Alexander Village battled to an enthralling 4-4 stalemate despite both teams struggling to maintain their footing in the wet conditions.
Alexander Village snatched the lead after seven minutes courtesy of an own goal off the boots of Linris Carrington, who sliced the ball into the goal following an attempt to curtail a run from Leon Yaw.
North Ruimveldt responded with immediacy through Anthony Sancho, who hammered a fierce shot following a partial save from the opposing custodian from an earlier attempt at goal to level the proceedings one minute later.
However, veteran Shem Porter restored their ascendancy in the ninth minute with an accurate free-kick taken from the right side that hit the upright, before landing in the goal.
North’s talisman Gerald Gritten, another expert in this format, reacted right away with his effort sliding through the legs of the goalkeeper to nestle in the back of the goal after eleven minutes.
The two teams attacked with menace for the lead and as they had done all night, Alexander Village regained the lead through Sheldon Fletcher, who unleashed a thunderous strike to beat the keeper to his right two minutes later.
Jamal Hamilton’s 15th minute screamer from a free kick restored parity once again as the clocked ticked to full time with the teams deadlocked at 3-3, before Sancho returned to hand North Ruimvedt the lead for the first time in the encounter in the 22nd minute.
However, Ryan October salvaged a point for Alexander Village in the dying moments of the game hitting a right-footer past the keeper, before the final whistle sounded.
Randolph Wagner recorded a brace in the 15th and 18th minutes while Michael Pedro, Nathaniel Nagaloo and Jermin Junior scored in the second, 13th and 17th minutes respectively as West Front Road crushed debutant Ministry of Health 5-0.
Leopold Street made a positive start with a 2-1 win over Festival City with Akeem Rajkumar and Rondell Williams netting in the eighth and 11th minutes respectively, while Jamal Brown’s 18th minute strike was the lone response for the loser.
In other results, Campbellville provided the first major upset after beating West Back Road 2-0 through a brace from Ozeal Small in the 14th and 20th minutes.
North East La Penitence and Albouystown showdown ended in a 1-1 draw with Calvin Moore’s 8th minute effort giving North East La Penitence the lead, before Devon Dooker equalised in the 23rd minute for Albouystown.
Channel-9 Warriors gained a walkover from Back Circle.
