Barbados led by Aston Villa’s amateur Graham Wilkes toured British Guiana in August 1953 and lost a five match soccer series 3- nil. The Bajans goalkeeper was West Indies Cricketer Cammie Smith. The tourist opened their British Guiana campaign on a positive note defeating GFC 2 -1 at GFC Ground. Skipper Graham Wilkes of Aston Villa scored both goals. First international test played at football headquarters GFC, British Guiana came from behind to win 3-2.
The tourist scored first when Winston Drayton beat custodian Ted Nurse with a thunderbolt. The host equalized in the second half through Reggie Moses, the Bajans went ahead 5 minutes later when Lucas beat Nurse to his left. Debutant Drakes made it two all with a dagger that Barbados custodian Cammie Smith failed to hold. Lewis ‘Water Boat’ Weithers magic kick sealed victory for British Guiana just before full time.
Second Test GFC Ground, British Guiana led by a double from Victoria’s Herbie Jordon won 2-nil.
Thirds Test draw, one all GFC Ground.
Barbados scored early in the second half. Hubert ‘Senor’ Braithwaite saved the day for British Guiana with a rocket like shot that give Cammie Smith no chance in the Bajan goal.
Fourth Test drawn one all at GFC Ground.
Again Barbados were denied victory with only 10 minutes to full time and leading one –nil courtesy of a ‘Brickie’ Lucas’ goal late in the second half. British Guiana got the equalizer through George Ferguson just 10 minutes from full time. British Guiana wrapped up series with a one- nil victory at GFC. Reggie Moses was the British Guiana marksman.
