Play in the Annual Mayor’s Cup football tournament rolls on, on Sunday with a triple header card at the Victoria Ground on the East Coast of Demerara. Last Sunday’s games were not played due to the inclement weather pattern. However, the tournament will resume on Sunday and three games will be played to make up for the rescheduling.
Sunday’s action will see BV Triumph taking on Cougars from 5:00pm in the curtain raiser, while in game number 2 from 7:00pm, Ann’s Grove challenge Grove Hi Tech. The nightcap from 9:00pm will feature a clash between home side Victoria Kings against Federal Winners Connection of Linden in a meeting of the respective area champions.
The tournament is down to its last 16 teams. The other teams in this stage are Camptown, Santos, Pouderoyen, Beavers, Cougars, Riddim Squad, Western Tigers, Den Amstel, Uitvlugt and Eagles of Linden.
One new sponsor has come on board with Top Brandz of High and Broad Streets Charlestown, distributor of the popular Interstate battries, lending valuable support. Aruwai Resort of the Essequibo River is one of the main contributors to this tournament with notable help from Ansa McAl, Minister of State Joe Harmon and his ministry, John Fernandes, Ricks and Sari and AH&L Kissoon. Coordinator Lennox Arthur, former National footballer and later Coach, who has been behind this tournament for 22 years, has expressed gratitude to the sponsors and fans who have supported.
The teams are competing for the Mayor’s Cup and a first prize of $700,000 donated by Aruwai Resort, second $300,000 and the Ansa McAl trophy, third $200,000 and the John Fernandes trophy and fourth $100,000 and the Ministry of State trophy. Ricks and Sari has also donated hampers which will go to the winning team. The tournament’s top goal scorer will get a three piece suite compliments of AH&L Kissoon Furniture Store.
