An accident on May 29, last, left 44-year-old Wazir Ali an amputee and 13-year-old Shemar Henry hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC).
Donald Downer, the driver of motor-vehicle PTT 1343, around 15:16 hours on Sunday May 29, slammed into Henry, then hit Ali before smashing into a parked motorcar PLL 7857.
According to Henry’s mother, Sharon Davidson, her teenage son was walking along the West Bank Demerara Public road with two friends when a blue Nissan Bluebird came speeding and hit her son who “pitched into the air” upon impact.
After hitting Henry, the car then smashed into Ali who was waiting on a bus at the time. Upon impact Ali sustained severe damage to his left leg, which had to be amputated.
After hitting the two bystanders, Downer’s vehicle crashed into a parked car and ended up in a trench.
Thirteen-year-old Henry was reportedly on his way to play football with his two friends when disaster struck. Video footage from nearby buildings shows that Downer was moving at a fast rate when he struck the two pedestrians.
Owner of motor-vehicle PLL 7857 who spoke to this publication under condition of anonymity stated that he stopped and parked at the side of the road directly opposite popular auto-spares store “Amrol” to purchase a beverage.
He noted that a few seconds after he walked into a store, he heard a loud “bang’ and rushed out to see what had caused the sound. He continued that as he went out onto the road, he saw a car in the trench at the side of the road and two persons lying on the road.
He continued that it was then that he saw that his car had been hit. The man noted that since the day of the accident, the driver of the “Nissan Bluebird”, Donald Downer, has been denying any wrongdoing on his part.
The police, he noted too, have not been aggressively investigating the incident.
Ali has been hospitalised in GPHC since the accident on Sunday and Henry is listed as critical in the ICU of GPHC. Henry reportedly suffered severe internal injuries and a fractured skull.
