Dear Editor,
Please allow me the opportunity to comment on an article titled “Berbice Cricket Board says congratulations and good luck to Gudakesh Motie (dd) 18-05-2016 . I would also like to express congratulations Mr. Motie, a youngster who achieved so much in very turbulent times, yes he came from a very good club, one of the best but one must how is it that this club produces so many stars and the others nothing.
One of the reasons I believe is the farce that passes for Cricket Trials run by the Berbice Cricket Board. I was fortunate to witness a recent “TRIALS” conducted to select the Berbice U ’17 team 2016.
On the first day of the trials the Selector, it would appear, was already in possession of a team list and as such had already failed some of the best players on show. I vividly recollect a youngster not being allowed to bat after bowling 5 overs in the process taking 1 wicket for 25 runs. Point to note is that he is a former National U15 spinner Nivendra Prasad, an excellent fielder and who’s bowling figures was marred by weak on field support.
Editor to further compromise the situation on the second day he was again not allowed to bat, he however bowled his allotted 4 overs for 5 runs bagging 2 wickets in the process.
It was surprising, however, when a player who did not attend the first day game and who failed miserably on the second day with both bat and ball was selected, while Prasad was not considered.
Sir, point is, selectors contribute the development of clubs and players and actions such as those outlined above make or break a player and by extension the club. It should be noted that a club is only as strong as the players it produces. I feel strongly that the actions of these selectors should be investigated, especially on the first day. I must also mention that one of these selectors is a coach attached to a club whose players were not good enough but found themselves on the team.
Concerned Cricket Enthusiast.
