The Guyana Press Association (GPA) has condemned the most recent and brazen attack on press freedom
saying that it was well “calculated.”
On Saturday evening staffers and friends of Kaieteur News congregated outside the building for the wake of the late Dale Andrews. On that solemn occasion, persons were alerted by a loud sound. It was later realized that that was the sound of a grenade that was thrown near a vehicle owned by Kaieteur News publisher, Glenn Lall.
Yesterday the GPA said that stakeholders in the international community, opposition, government and civil society must speak out against what seems like a calculated act to intimidate the work of Kaieteur News.
The Association called on the Guyana Police Force to execute “an in-depth investigation into the presence of a live grenade near a vehicle owned by the publisher of Kaieteur News, Glenn Lall… Regardless of the motive, the act alone has a chilling effect on press freedom.”
Further, the Association called on the intellectual authors and perpetrators to “desist from such a dastardly act.”
GPA affirmed that the media in Guyana must be allowed to carry out its crucial work of being society’s watchdog, ensuring transparency and efficacy in state and the private sector, without frightening distractions like these.
The GPA noted the government’s “prompt statement” condemning the attack and of its full support to the Guyana Police Force in the investigations. The government has said that the grenade thrown at Lall’s vehicle represents a grave act of terror. The government noted that the act was designed to intimidate harm and create fear.
GPA, like government, pledged solidarity with the staff of Kaieteur News and the wider media community during this period.
