Dear Editor,
Now that the party is over (the 50th Independence Anniversary) the true COLOUR of the present Administration will be revealed for the Guyanese people to see. I open with this statement after the simple observation; the observation that during the past year, the Coalition had been planning for the Jubilee, a perfect wall to hide behind. They and the Guyanese population were busy with the aura of the jubilee planning.
It has been a solid year since the PPP was removed from office by the Guyanese people. An Administration that has been accused of countless acts that could and will be described as corrupt. The new Administration during the period of being the opposition and the period leading up to the elections campaign, had the actions of the PPP to pedal on as their campaign platform. The coalition used the media to the MAX, getting their voices across to the masses.
We all know that the PPP actions could be described as nothing but dishonest and corrupt. ==NO denying that. But now that the PPP is no more (out of office)… it seems that the PEOPLE OF GUYANA HAVE TAKEN A LEAP OUT OF THE PAN, INTO THE OPEN FLAME. A fire that seems to be getting hotter and hotter at every level of existence for the Guyanese people.
1 Real wages declining for the Guyanese people,,,,, in simple language, the buying power that a dollar had a year ago, compared to today certainly does not have that power. It’s as clear as night and day. How on earth could any Government official sit back and see the struggles of the Guyanese people, without the feeling of remorse? I witnessed a very heart wrenching thing the Sunday after the birthday bash at Bourda market. I saw a woman— housewife, homemaker? Trying to purchase; that should read, trying to decide what to purchase to provide a meal for her family. The “bewildered” woman stood at the stand and as I watch, I could tell that she was having a difficult time deciding how to stretch the few dollars she had. The vender from her body language, picked-up the woman’s dilemma ….. (don’t want to say what happened next…but she left contented). On a side note, I want to complain on the lack of Guyanese products in the supermarkets. This is one area the Coalition Government could capitalize on (creating a vibrant local industry that produces and utilizes local products) and really do something for the nation.
2 Taxes being increased and added faster than one can take a breath of air. Speaking very bluntly, it is my humble opinion that the Coalition was hit with the realization that after giving themselves that big fat pay rise ( who in the world gets a 50% pay increase at one GULP… that’s for another topic of discussion) that the money have to come from somewhere. The country is not generating cash, so they have to bleed (oh that’s called taxing) the Guyanese people to support that pay rise.
3 Security or lack of— is a real bother for the average Guyanese. I know of many persons in Guyana who have been victims of the increased crime. Of someone who has suffered lost from criminal activities within the past year. More and more, people are literally barricading themselves in their homes with grill work around their homes. The inability of the Government to come up with a plan—any plan, to ease the fears of the nation is a shame to bear. The lack of security on that level is certainly a failing grade.
The list goes on and on which begs the question “have we jumped from the pan into the fire” I trust that it is just an illusion on my part. Every Politician needs to be reminded that their only duty is to serve the people….
