A number of sports gear donated
A major shipping entity in Guyana the Oldendorff Carriers, which is based in New Amsterdam, Berbice and is a major Bauxite carrier, has joined forces with the Guyana Police Force to enhance on Police Social Crime
Prevention Programme.
Recently the company donated a number of sports gear to the Police B division in the force’s Community Outreach Intervention Programme.
The company through its General Manager Paul Mohan and Finance Manager Marlon Jaundoo paid a visit to Commander of Police B Division, Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam, at his office at Strand and Forbes Burnham Street New Amsterdam.
After engaging in a series of healthy discussions on a number of topics where the two organisations could collaborate in bringing betterment to the society, a number of agreements were reached. Among the immediate assistance was the donation of a number of sports gear to the Guyana Police Force which would be used by the Youths of the New Amsterdam Police Youth Club. The simple handing over ceremony was attended by a number of senior officers and youths from the area.
Mr. Amsterdam expressed his thanks and appreciation on behalf of the Guyana Police Force to the Management and staff of the Oldendorff Company for their timely and most worthy intervention and assistance.
He said that the Social Crime Prevention Programme was started in areas with much crime and now encompasses a number of new initiatives. Noting that, so far the programme has played a major part in the reduction of crime. “We here have picked up the pace in terms of our social intervention and reactions with youths.” He is confident that it is working, stating that the division is working towards crime prevention. ”We don’t want to have to deal with the issue after it has occurred,” he noted.
We will be working with youths in all areas especially unemployment, broken and crime affected homes. We want to get in touch with youths before they fall in the wrong hands.”
Mr. Mohan in brief remarks congratulated the police force for what it is doing and had special words of commendation for Mr. Amsterdam who he deemed a very good leader. He said that the GPF has a big mandate and always needs to stand by youths in the community.
The kids are our main resources and we need to take care of them. He gave the commitment that his company is always willing to assist in whatever ways possible especially when it comes to children and education.
Community Relations Officer Police B Division Assistant Superintendent Keith Williams and Community Relations Liaison Officer, who is spear heading the programme, in remarks encouraged the youths to stay in groups. Williams stated that groups empowers and educates youths whether it is through sports or education so that they can make better decisions in their lives. (Samuel Whyte)
