The Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) will be aggressively lobbying for corporate support for the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Under-16 Championships, which will be held in Guyana from
July 2 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
GABF President, Nigel Hinds told the media at a press briefing yesterday at Cara Lodge that this acceleration of the process to procure the necessary support from corporate Guyana to ensure the event is successful is compulsory now.
“We’re still behind the eighth ball with the recent celebrations for Guyana’s 50th Anniversary we had to let that take precedence over our outreach to the corporate community,” Hinds informed at the occasion that past President, Joseph ‘Reds’ Perreira graced.
“We are not where we want to be because we didn’t push for funding during jubilee celebrations. We are now accelerating that process, and by the 15th of June, we will know for sure what our position is (as it regards to funding),” Hinds said.
Guyana is scheduled to co-host the CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting early in July and Hinds hopes that corporate Guyana will help the federation and the Local Organising Committee put on an impressive event at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
“We want to ensure that this reflects well on Guyana. We have the CARICOM Heads meeting in Guyana in July; many of them may attend the games at the Sports Hall,” he noted, adding “this is a national effort with everyone on board”.
Hinds indicated that he has already procured $1M from the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) and Quality Seafoods Inc. Government has committed $20M to Guyana’s hosting the CBC event that has a total budget of $80M. Perreira also made a donation.
“Basketball has moved leaps and bounds since my time. I congratulate all those who have played a role in that. I was happy that Guyana was awarded the Caribbean Championships. I hope that I can appeal to the private sector to come onboard with this development Championship,” Perreira said.
The former GABF Head in the 1960s and ‘70s observed that what he has donated to the event is “just a token” that he hopes will motivate the private sector. “I am partnering with the federation hoping to get the desired response from the private sector,” he said.
The Cliff Anderson Sports Hall has been undergoing a transformation to be ready for the CBC’s U16 male and female Championship, which includes the importation of two new basketball goals with the old ones likely for the National Gymnasium.
