Dear Editor,
I have thought long and hard about writing this letter. I chose to remain anonymous because I know President Granger will call me in the US where I live to speak to me on the path I have taken here. I served in the army with the President and it was the realization of a personal dream when one of the soldiers I served closely with became the President of my country. The Guyana Defence Force, contrary to what people may feel about President Burnham, is one of the most professionally run armies in the world. I soldiered with David Granger and he was the embodiment of professionalism
Family pressure drove me to Region 11 but my heart is always in Guyana. I have returned several times since I left including for the Golden Jubilee. Before I proceed I would like to congratulate my friend, Ivelaw Griffith on his appointment at UG. When David Granger became the head of the PNC, I had a transformation in attitude. I was now interested in the politics of the PNC. In the 2011 and 2015 elections, I was happy to make my small donations. I have a son and daughter who have done well in corporate America and through my persuasion, they have made their small contributions too for both elections
I have just returned to the US from Guyana and based on what I see, what I know and the people I have talked with for the month I was in Guyana, I have had a change of heart. David Granger has disappointed me. I hope the feeling is temporary but my visit opened my eyes so I doubt I would change my mind. The turning point was Joe Harmon and his controversy. I served with Joe and one incident in the army was a revelation. I am sorry I cannot recount it here because the newspaper would not publish it. Joe Harmon has remained the Joe Harmon I know. I have had confidential things told to me during the time I spent in Guyana for the Golden Jubilee about certain APNU big wigs. The people I have spoken with or I should say spoke to me have access to David Granger. If they can tell me why would they not tell the President?
The future of Guyana doesn’t look good with our new government. I confess it breaks my heart to say so. For me, there needs to be a new dispensation. For me this will necessitate a new political party. I would like to see a new political party with someone like Freddie Kissoon and Nigel Hughes in the leadership contesting the next election. The moving factor in that party should be Mr. Glenn Lall. Will Freddie KIssoon, Nigel Hughes and Glen Lall do it?
Freddie Kissoon is unique in Guyana. I don’t think there was ever or ever will be soon in the future, a person that has so brilliantly succeeded in crossing the racial divide in Guyana. Afro Guyanese have claimed Freddie as one of their own. ACDA should follow in the footsteps of the NAACP and honour Freddie. The NAACP has awarded Whites for their contribution to the Black struggle. Freddie has done just that in Guyana for Blacks. Freddie is a human rights perfectionist with a brilliant mind who lives an ordinary life and comes without any baggage at all. He is the perfect fit for a presidential candidate
Nigel Hughes is what Guyana needs if we are going to make a future out of Guyana. I would rate Nigel as the best legal mind to come out of this country. He is respected and admired throughout this country. Nigel is more trusted by Guyanese than any APNU politician except the President. But I say this with a heavy heart. After the Joe Harmon controversy, David Granger may have lost the confidence of many of his admirers. I would count myself among them
I believe the key to a new party’s success lies with Glen Lall. What this man has done for Guyana cannot be compared with anyone who operates a newspaper anywhere in the world. Glen Lall brought back democracy to Guyana. He should have been given the Order of Excellence at last week’s ceremony. This did not happen and it will not do the image of the Government any good. Glen, whom I met briefly at the Palm Court some years back, is instantly likeable. He holds the key to the success of any new party. It will not take off without him. I hope he gives it a try. For me the PPP needs to go away. I never appreciated the AFC. APNU is failing. Guyana is at the stage where it needs a new party. Guyana has the decent men and women to build such a party. I would include Dr. David Hinds, Chris Ram, Anand Goolsarran, Mark Benschop, Lincoln Lewis, Dr. Janet Bulkan, Sherod Duncan, Sherwod Lowe, Dr. Melissa Ifill. It will win a resounding victory in 2020
